Today, I’ve gathered all my sources on different mushroom methods and compiled them all in one place. And we’re definitely talking about the magical kind.
How many ways of mushroom consumption can you name off the top of your dome?
Much has evolved since man first started consuming magic mushrooms; many ways have built the foundation of our psychedelic understanding, and others are a product of our more recent psychedelic resurgence.
I’ve gathered all the mushroom methods I know and grouped some into categories, since some topics will govern multiple consumption methods.
I’ll briefly break down these mushroom methods, a general compilation more than a deep dive. Along with any resources I find that may further your education, if you desire.
I can only educate you on the ways known to modern society (or me). I do like to ponder if any methods have been lost to time.
Important Things To Keep In Mind
Conversion
Before we begin, I want to state that psilocybin converts to psilocin when it enters the body, and this psilocin is responsible for voyaging our minds to these psychedelic realms.
Different practices will break down the psilocybin into psilocin much faster, resulting in earlier onset times, different potency levels, and providing more palatable consumption methods that reduce bitterness and nausea.
Causes Of Decay
Psilocybin and psilocin degrade when exposed to these factors.
- Light
- Heat
- Moisture
- Oxygen
Proper storage will slow these processes, along with some of the methods I’ll be touching on today. Time will, of course, eventually quench its thirst and devour its beneficial properties, as it does with all.
What’s the suspected main cause of all these foul-faced stomachs?
It’s the very thing that gives mushrooms their delightful shape, Chicin. The main fibre structure found glueing the cell walls of fungi together, and found in the exoskeletons of arthropods and crustacean shells.
This muscular fibre treads the line of indigestibility to the point that the enzymes in our bodies struggle to metabolise it.
Chicin probably isn’t the only thing that will abandon your stomach with negative consequences, but I feel it’s a massive component.
Grinding your mushrooms into a powder essentially means you’re grinding the Chicin cells down to be more easily consumed.
For all their delicacy, our mushy little mushrooms can be rather strong & resistant.
Know Thy Mushroom!
Psilocybin mushrooms are powerful tools that demand to be treated as such. I’m only here to give you options on how to consume.
So please, my friends, always do your own research on these methods, be very aware of the dangers, and always be 1000% sure that your supply is what you think it is.
Eating Dried Or Fresh Mushrooms
The act of consuming raw mushrooms
Is obviously the method that birthed the discovery of psilocybin. Our ancient ancestors (the guinea pigs) laid a solid enough foundation for the safety & potency of these mushrooms, allowing us to continue refining the work and leading us to our ever-evolving present-day understanding of psychedelics.
Different psychedelic mushroom species can be very diverse in the way they need to be prepared for safe consumption, but the benefits of using dried or fresh mushrooms seem to follow the same themes.
What I'm Teaching Today
Now let’s take a look at what we know.
I’m going to point out the key differences between consuming fresh Vs dried mushrooms, as they can be quite drastic.
Facts On Fresh Mushrooms
- Contains 85% – 95% water, resulting in a much less concentrated psilocybin level.
- Less reliable in measuring an accurate dose.
- limited to immediate use, as its shelf life will only survive a few days after harvest (even with refrigeration)
- A little limiting on the ways you can consume.
- But they do look strikingly more appealing if you ask me.
Facts On Dried Mushrooms
- Contains between 3% and 10% water, resulting in much more concentrated psilocybin levels per gram.
- Easier to make an accurate dose as there is much less water content.
- If stored and dried properly, you can keep your mushrooms up to a year or even longer.
- A vastly more versatile option, allowing you to consume in many ways, including teas, powder, etc.
- Not forgetting you can use it at any time you desire, which is super handy as timing is often key to the mushroom experience.
Further Thoughts
I just thought of this method as strangely similar to how ancient humans would cook before they discovered the delights of seasoning and flavouring.
Whether you’re scrounging the forest floors yourself or trusting your psychedelic sources. You can trust this method to be among the most reliable (in the context of maintaining your psilocybin/psilocin content during the preparation). As psilocybin isn’t lost to anything other than decay and poor preparation, alongside being the most practised and documented method throughout human history.
But it’s 2026, and we have many ways to make these experiences more enjoyable, easier to digest, and better equipped to accommodate your needs or desires.
Who says you have to consume your raw mushrooms so plainly, mushrooms on toast? Mushroom salad? Mushroom pizza? You could even douse your mushrooms in something sweet, kinda like constructing your own toffee apple concoction! Okay, this is dipping into my cooking section, but you get the point.
Lemon Tekking & Potion Making
What Is The Art Of Lemon Tek?
Think of Lemon tek as the technique of using acidic fruits in the preparation stages of mushroom consumption. Soaking your mushrooms in highly acidic fruit juices is considered to kick-start the chemical conversion before consumption.
And it’s generally discussed that it leads to stronger peak experiences and shorter durations.
Without any doubt, the art of the Lemon-Tek makes your mushrooms supremely tastier to consume.
Of course, it can be used the same way with many fruits, including lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, and even tomatoes. And who wouldn’t appreciate the nutritious citrus boost- I, for one.
My Personal Verdict
Personally, I’ve consumed psilocybin using this method, prepared by the facilitator of my private ceremony. A magical lemon-infused potion was blended up for me. I only had 2 cups, and I grew very fond of the taste!
I really enjoyed the lemon-infused taste and the general vibe of going down the lemon Tek method myself, one such way anyway, as I imagine it’s prepared in many different ways around the world.
I’d also like to add that my potion was prepared with fresh mushrooms offered straight from the substrate.
The Latest Facts On Lemon-Tek
Our understanding of these complex topics is evolving daily, and new research has come to my attention regarding lemon tek and the chemical magic occurring within our bodies.
I will give you the facts in caveman terms; take from it what you will. (Both experiments were observed within a 60-minute window) Links to the articles below by bigger brains than mine.
Stomach Acid (Brit Box Labs)
So, it’s been generally believed that our stomach acid is what converts the psilocybin into psilocin. But recent research suggests otherwise. Stomach acid proves to be more of a preserver than a converter, slowly starting the conversion before stabilizing after 30 minutes.

The Juices: (Sun City Labs)
An experiment was conducted to investigate the conversion of psilocybin to psilocin using various liquids.
- H2O results in almost-instant conversion, and the psilocin then completely degrades within 60 minutes.
- Orange juice (& cola) enacts almost instant conversion whilst fighting away any degradation.
- Lemon juice conversion is much, much slower and was still not complete within 60 minutes!

Brewing Magical Teas
Another much older and arguably popular form of psilocybin potion making is the art of brewing yourself a mushroom tea.
Documented fairly well throughout psilocybin’s history, dating back as far as 1000 BCE. When the Aztecs & Mayans were brewing these magical potions during sacred religious ceremonies & rituals.
Since those times, psilocybin tea certainly hasn’t lost any popularity. Scattered across our historical records and today’s pop culture.
This is a fairly easy method you can do from home, and adding a bit of honey or something similar comes highly recommended by our ancient ancestors!
Ancient Psilocybin Infused Alcohol?
The Aztecs & Mayans are truly fascinating cultures to explore in relation to psychedelics. Venturing into many methods during their sacred rituals & religious ceremonies, similar to us today. However, drenched in way more mysticism and mystery.
The presence of their psychedelic activities is confirmed through archaeological residue analysis, but I feel much is left to the imagination, debate, or rediscovery.
Aztec Method
The historical accounts tell us that Aztec priests frequently mixed psilocybin mushrooms called Teonanacatl, meaning “flesh of the gods,” with a fermented alcoholic beverage known as Pulque, made from agave sap.
Pulque is milky in color and has been produced in central Mexico for millennia.
Mayan Method
The Maya were known to drink a mildly alcoholic fermented honey wine called Balche. Infused with psilocybin mushrooms and even morning glory seeds, this mixture allowed them to enter deep spiritual trances during their sacred rituals and religious ceremonies.
Ancient Chocolate Beverage?
Among these two cultures, it’s known they had a deep connection with Cacao beans. Which were not just a common food among both, but also a currency and a great source of spiritual power for the Mayans.
It’s known that these Cacao beans were prepared into beverages mixed with psilocybin mushrooms and given to warriors and spiritual leaders, providing them with physical energy and spiritual visions.
If I were alive during this time, I’d be damn tempted to try some psilocybin hot chocolate. Given that I constructed myself into a suitable warrior. Would you?
Cooking With Psilocybin
Thoughts From No Kitchen Wizard
One method you can get really fancy with, if you have the creativity and cooking skills. The possibilities stretch endlessly, limited only by your own imagination. My mind can barely even fathom the number of delicious ways you could serenade your taste buds.
Alongside the endless sea of savory dishes you can craft, there lies a thick layer of sweet creations awaiting discovery. Gummies and desserts of your own design, intertwined with psilocybin, seem likely to increase in popularity to me.
Now, this method is still rooted in a lot of experimentation before we as a society have truly perfected the blueprint. But I think the same can be said for all psychedelic substances and their methods.
As we continue to educate the world on these mystical matters, I ponder what kind of psychedelic chef wizards may be bubbling to the surface.
I do wonder if psychedelics during the 70’s weren’t so easily cast away to forbidden corners of human knowledge, whether we’d have fully functioning and legal psilocybin restaurants. Would we even have a psychedelic Gordan Ramsey gracing our screens?
Psychedelic Restaurants?
Thinking of psychedelic restaurants, in China, in the Yunnan region, a mysterious wild hallucinogenic mushroom known as Jian Shou Qing, scientifically known as Lanmaoa Asiatica, is legally served in restaurants and sold in local markets.
This is one strange mushroom and very different from most others, as it contains no psilocybin or psilocin, so its trip-inducing chemical makeup is a total mystery.
These restaurants aren’t trying to get half of China high, as they cook the trippy properties out of the mushrooms. But if they do mistakenly undercook your mushrooms, you’d best be prepared to see an army of tiny people! (My mind thinks of an even more fairy-tale-like version of the 90’s classic film “The Borrowers”)
Mushroom Infused Chocolate
I’m also adding mushroom-infused chocolate here, which has become highly popular during our most recent psychedelic resurgence. Maybe a little dangerous, simply because most of these products taste so amazing that you can barely tell they’re overflowing with psychedelic goodness.
Nevertheless, this method will help you bypass some negative aspects of the mushroom experience, such as bitter tastes, and may help with nausea. Although I do remember having a minor upset stomach after some myself (there could also be other human factors at play).
Take this with a grain of sugar! But from my personal experiences, I believe consuming mushrooms this way provides a faster onset and maybe a stronger peak. What are your experiences?
Final Thoughts
As you may notice throughout this post, psilocybin has been prepared & used at higher temperatures for a long time in our history while still providing us the desired benefits. (Although not the most researched topic) I feel that using lower temperatures whenever possible is advised based on my sources.
You may not lose all your psilocybin to high-heat exposure, but it will stand a much better chance of retaining its beneficial properties with lower heat.
Crafting A Powdered Form
King Of Versatility
Grinding your mushrooms into a powder is a super versatile method. I can’t think of another form that allows more freedom. You could create your own capsules, which is an amazing method for microdosing. You could add to your food and teas, and if you have the mind of a chemist, even make your own concentrated extracts. It’s very handy having a powerful powder on hand, like a psychedelic mozzarella!
Adding powder to your potion would seem an easier option in the preparation stages to me. But I’m no potion master like Merlin, although I harbor long locks and have been bestowed the nickname before.
I may speak for only myself, but there is a very ancient feel, a ritualistic vibe you get when grinding your mushrooms with a Mortar and Pestle. Of course, in our advancing society, there are more modern ways of doing this, but sometimes you can’t beat the feeling of the old ways.
Recap On Utilizing Your Mushroom Powder
- Pot of psychedelic mozzarella for your food.
- Mix with teas and other potions.
- Make your own capsules (Great for Microdosing).
- Make your own extracts (A concentrated powder or liquid).
I definitely wouldn’t advise snorting mushroom powder, but I bet some crazies have tried.
Thoughts Worth Thinking (In Context Of Everything)
Given today’s online society, and depending on your area of residence and personal requirements. I know it’s entirely possible (however rare) to get these types of items through a legally trusted online source and, of course, from the other, shadier online characters.
Please be careful if you’re obtaining ANY chemical-based items through these kinds of methods, as in most instances the law isn’t your best friend. And I feel proper regulation isn’t always a guarantee.

Smoking Mushrooms
My Thoughts & Findings
Humans have a long history of smoking things that aren’t inherently meant to be smoked, but that’s certainly never stopped us in our pursuit. This is not a method I was overly familiar with before making this post, so let’s take a look at what I found.
I came across a Vice video of Morris Hamilton dabbling in the art of smoking Amanita Muscaria mushrooms, and I knew I had to share it with you. Definitely not a common, documented, or certainly safest method, but certainly an intriguing one.
My mind does like to dwell on whether this was a lost practice known to ancient civilizations.
I don’t like to doubt that, given the curious nature of humans, we have, somewhere along the line, experimented with smoking other mushroom strains. (Maybe that’s some research best left for another post.)
Setting Psilocybin/Muscimol On Fire?
Our current understanding indicates that Psilocybin remains intact up to 190 degrees Celsius and melts at around 220 degrees Celsius. I’d like to think there are ways of smoking oneself into the trip, even though it’s not the most recommended way for your health.
It’d be wise to mention that mushrooms in the Amanita family don’t actually contain Psilocybin & psilocin, but contain Muscimol and Ibotenic Acid. The temperature at which Muscimol becomes inactive is around 175 degrees, and Ibotenic Acid appears to have a melting range between 141 and 147 degrees Celsius. (according to all my research.)
Also, given the dangers of consuming Amanita Muscaria, it’s vital to leave the preparation of such things in the hands of experienced professionals.
